How long does a permit last?

For single-family homes, the rule changed on July 1, 2026 (Florida HB 803). A building permit for a single-family home now expires one year after it's issued, or when the next edition of the Florida Building Code takes effect, whichever is later.

For other projects, a permit generally becomes inactive or expires if construction does not begin within 180 days of issuance or if work is suspended or abandoned for approximately 180 days. Approved inspections generally help keep the permit active.

Extensions or renewals may be available through the local building department, depending on the circumstances.
